CAPOEIRA CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Get in shape, meet new friends, and do things you never thought you could do before!

TEEN AND ADULT CLASSES

Basics class: We recommend that all new students start in beginner classes, which focus on basic technique and skills. Beginners may also take mixed level classes, but should complement this training with beginner classes. Beginner classes are not designed to be a level that students move through, as they are focused on building and refining basic skills. Advanced students often take beginner classes to work on the foundation of their technique.

Capoeira Fundamentals: The first Tuesday of each month, the Beginner class is devoted to the basics. The class will be slower-paced than regular Beginner classes. Students will leave with a basic understanding of proper technique for the fundamental capoeira movements and familiarity with the rituals of the roda. There are no prerequisites, you simply need the desire to show up and do your best. This class is perfect for people who are new to capoeira as well as more experienced students who want to review the basics.

All Levels class: These classes are open to all students but are geared towards whomever is present. If the majority of students in a mixed level class are advanced, the class will be more advanced. Often, to accommodate all levels, the instructor will split the group so that students receive training appropriate to their level.

KIDS' CLASS

Kids’ capoeira classes are taught using games and exercises emphasizing music and acrobatics—working both physical coordination and mental abilities. Classes cover basic capoeira techniques, rhythms, instruments, and songs in Portuguese.

Kids' Capoeira for Ages 5-7: Emphasizes cooperation and spatial awareness and focuses on building basic physical skills and coordination. Students begin to learn acrobatic movements and improve balance and coordination of the arms and legs. Classes are not appropriate for children under 5.

Kids' Capoeira for Ages 8-12: Emphasizes skill building and leadership, and builds strength, flexibility, and endurance. Students begin learning more complex acrobatics and sequences of movements. Children under 8 are not physically or developmentally prepared for this class.

Kids Summer Camp for Ages 6-12: 2011 Summer Camp information available March 2011. Please check back and register early to hold your space and pay less!

Kids explore and learn capoeira and maculelê stick dance and drumming, the history and music of these arts, as well as take classes with guest instructors to learn skills like gymnastics and Afro-Brazilian dance, and explore the neighborhood during lunch-time Mission walks.
