Annual Teen/Adult Batizado & Workshop Series: A gathering of cultures, information, and friends

The recent 22nd Annual Batizado & Workshop series (YES folks that says 22nd!!!) was a complete success.

BATIZADO 2013Sixty students participated in the Batizado and graduation ceremony on Sunday, November 3rd, and many earned new cords for their dedication and achievement. The ways in which these annual events galvanize the larger ABADÁ community cannot be understated. They serve not just as opportunities to hone skills, learn new developments in the art, and exchange information, stories and songs; but as a means of bridging gaps between countries and across cord levels. The event is also a chance for some of the more advanced students to visit and train with people from around the globe that they have known for years.

BATIZADO 2013Preceding the Batizado, three days of workshops led by Mestre Morcego were attended by a packed house of ACSF students and visiting students from Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Nantucket, Vancouver, Montreal, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and Japan.

Mestre Morcego, who is from Rio de Janeiro, was one of the first capoeira guest artists Mestra Márcia brought to San Francisco, beginning with her first Batizado in 1992. Other special guests included Professora Maestrinha (Rio de Janeiro), Professora Yara (Washington D.C.), Professor Furacão (NYC), Instrutors Coco (NYC), Prego (NYC), Cascavel (Montreal), Xodó (Vero Beach Florida), and our own Instrutores Sereia, Corrente and Vesper, plus many Graduados/as from SF and around the globe!

HUGE THANK YOU to all who traveled to participate in the event, and to those who hosted guests, donated and cooked meals ( from dealmeisters, who provides the best meal), and volunteered! We could NOT have done it without your support.
