CandomblÉ Drumming
Derived from the Yoruba people of West Africa, Candomblé was founded in Brazil as a distinct tradition in the 1830’s. This ancient religion is centered on a pantheon of Orixás, each signified by a particular color, supplicated with a traditional food, and communicated to through a sacred rhythm, song, and dance. Guided by an authentic Master born in the Candomblé tradition, participants learn about the history of Candomblé, its current practices and the traditional drumming techniques and sacred chants that are associated with the religion. Gamo Da Paz teaches these cultural traditions of Candomblé through the provision of lecture, demonstration, and student participation. Students will learn:
- The history of Candomblé and its current practices in Brazil
- Introduction of the Orixás with an explanation of identifying characteristics
- Demonstration of Candomblé rhythms and songs
- Participation in playing rhythms and singing songs
Mondays, 8:00-9:00pm
This class will conclude on December 12th, 2011. Please check back for future sessions.
