AFRO-BRAZILIAN PERCUSSION

percussion classIn this class, you will learn the popular percussion rhythms of Brazil, including samba reggae, batucada, maracatu, and frevo.

Master percussionist Gamo da Paz instructs students to play timbau, surdo, repenique, or caixa, among other instruments, in a Brazilian drum ensemble, or bateria. Students can bring their own instruments but it is not necessary.

Students have the opportunity to join Gamo and his group in a performance in the annual Carnaval San Francisco parade.

Drop-ins and all levels welcome.

Gamo is a native of Salvador, Bahia—the heart of African-influenced Brazil. Gamo was raised in the Candomblé tradition of the Ketu nation, and has performed internationally with touring groups such as Viva Bahia, Oba Oba, and Bale Folclorico da Bahia.
