SPIRIT OF BRAZIL 2009 Performance and Educational Series Mestranda Márcia Cigarra’s SPIRIT OF BRAZIL ‘09 will explore and celebrate the Brazilian marital art of capoeira and other traditional Brazilian dance and musical expressions through a series of master classes, symposiums and performances! This year’s festival will present some of the world’s best Afro-Brazilian artists, including Mestre Camisa, the founder and president of ABADÁ-Capoeira World-Wide and student of the legendary Mestre Bimba. Joining ABADA-Capoeira SF's explosive and energetic Performance Troupe will also be special guest artists from ABADÁ- Brazil, Europe and North America. Plus, local Brazilian dance and musical artists— each internationally celebrated as masters of Brazilian folk art traditions. Shown through a lens exploring the evolution of these arts, SPIRIT OF BRAZIL '09 will provide perspective on how capoeira and related arts have transformed from the post-slavery era into modern-day expressions. In an effort to preserve and rescue the contributions of one of the founding fathers of capoeira,"Mestre Bimba", this year's festival explores and accentuates the capoeira movements and rhythms he created.
