The Youth Batizado and Master Class held May 17th & 18th was a marvelous event. This annual event is incredibly important to our community. It is perhaps the most significant tradition in the art of capoeira. The Batizado is a catalyst that draws together our entire community to celebrate this rich cultural art, and to nurture the youth in our community- the future of ACSF.
On Saturday, 40 kids participated in the master class led by Mestra Márcia Cigarra. This was a real treat for the kids. While the youth students regularly see Márcia working about the studio, most have never had the opportunity to take a class with her. The kids enjoyed having her teach, and having the added attention from both Mestra Márcia, as well as the other visiting instructors who came to assist the classes.
We also had the pleasure of a site visit from Frances Phillips of the Haas Fund. The Haas Fund is one of ACSF’s leading funders of our in-school arts education programs. Mrs. Phillips was impressed with attention of the youth, and commented on the incredible grace and strength the students demonstrated. We greatly appreciate her taking the time to come visit!
The Batizado was a true celebration of the student’s accomplishments, as well as the work of Instructor Corrente and all of ACSF. More than 55 kids participated, and over 200 family members were there to cheer on the children. The commitment of Instructor Corrente was clearly evident by the high-level of skill and enthusiasm demonstrated by his students.
The Batizado event concluded with a drumming performance by youth drum class students. This new class led by Master Artist Gamo da Paz, started in January for youth 6-19 years old, and it has really started to take off! The students demonstrated their skills by conducting their own performance led by fellow student drummer, Tosh Santiago Harris.
