Gabriel Sinche, “Instrutor Tupinambá,” began assisting Mestra Cigarra at her capoeira classes at the Boys & Girls Club over a decade ago. Teaching has since become part of who he is.
“After that, it just opened a different cycle of my life,” he says. “I wanted to share the art of capoeira to others through my eyes.”
He began leading our weekly Sunday community class, whose proceeds pay for a scholarship for our teen students to travel to Brazil, and in 2023, he taught our weekly summer class for beginners. He wants to teach more, but it’s not financially feasible—he can’t take time off from his main job. In fact, all of our teachers except for Mestra Cigarra hold other jobs to make ends meet.
If ACSF were able to pay more, our artists could dedicate more of their time to what they do best: sharing the magic, discipline, athleticism, and community of capoeira. That’s why we are asking for your help in raising $40,000 by the end of 2024. With these funds, we will increase the wages for our teachers, allowing them to dedicate more time to their roles as capoeira educators. Can you help our teachers teach?
