Living Wages For Teachers Means More Kids’ Capoeira Classes

Capoeira teacher Miguel Hernandez “Instrutor Soldadinho” working with youth students.

Instrutor Soldadinho has 3 jobs, only one of which is teaching 12 capoeira classes a week at schools all over the San Francisco Bay Area and our studio in the Mission District. While he’s got an unbelievable amount of energy, his schedule isn’t sustainable. He loves capoeira, so he hangs in there. He says of his teaching:

“When I was a child, I didn’t have many opportunities. When I got [to the U.S.] as a teenager, I found support emotionally, mentally, physically. Now I can give something in return, and the best way is to be at capoeira and be part of this community.”

We want and need him to be rested, engaged, and able to do the teaching he loves. His schedule, he says, is challenging:

“I have a full-time job as a waiter and I take care of 60 to 90 people per day, per shift, eight hours. And I do a third job wrapping packages for Amazon deliveries. At the end of the day, I’m tired.”

If we could increase the wage we pay our teachers, Instrutor Soldadinho might be able to quit his third job and use that time to rest or teach. Can you help?
