Our performance company has been busy rehearsing for our 8th Spirit of Brazil Festival, which will be held at the Fort Mason Theater, May 31-June 2, 2019.
Spirit of Brazil ‘19 promises to bring the artistic splendor of Brazil to San Francisco. Spirit of Brazil ’19 presents the artistic elements of Capoeira through a fusion of contemporary and traditional music, dance, and martial arts from Brazil. Born out of a resistance to oppression and now internationally practiced, Capoeira’s history reminds us of the power of resistance—a message relevant today. Spirit of Brazil explores Capoeira as a living language and a form of problem-solving. Presented by an international cast, the dynamic acrobatic and athletic movements, history and tradition, and heart-thumping rhythms will leave you inspired!
Capoeira, once outlawed and shunned by society, remarkably is now Brazil’s coveted national sport, and is on UNESCO’s (United Nation’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Patrimonio Mundial or World Heritage List as a cultural expression having outstanding universal value. This unique art has grown in popularity to have practitioners in nearly every country across the globe, and a constant presence in today’s dance scene.
During the Festival weekend, on Saturday, June 1, guest artists from Brazil will lead a series of master classes at our Capoeira Arts Center.
