Coming Soon via Brazil: Professor Jabuti!

Professor-Jabuti- Mestra-Cigarra

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Jabuti, a renowned capoeira leader, will be joining us from Rio de Janeiro as our first extended-stay artist-in-residence.

For years, our staff and board have been working to implement a formal extended-stay residency program to expand the capacities of our artist staff and school. We are excited our relocation efforts are coming to a close and that Professor Jabuti is committed to coming to the US for a three-year stay. His contributions to capoeira in Brazil have been immeasurable, and we’re grateful that he’ll soon lend his energy and talents to our community in San Francisco.

We need your help in bringing this dream to fruition. Our newest teacher needs affordable housing, and as you probably know, San Francisco is famously unaffordable for those who pursue careers in the arts. If you have any information about below-market-rate housing in San Francisco, please let us know as soon as possible. You can speak with Márcia, Mestra Cigarra, or email us at info@abada.org.

Professor Jabuti started learning capoeira in 1996 with students of ABADÁ-Capoeira’s then-Mestrando Cobra. He soon began to train with Mestre Cobra, and in 2000 he received his blue cord. He has since made it his life’s work to teach children, teens, and adults throughout Rio. His upcoming stay in San Francisco will be his third visit.

We are grateful to Rhodora Derpo / Instrutora Sucurí, an immigration attorney and founder of Hiraya Immigration, for her tireless work in leading us through Professor Jabuti’s visa approval process.
