Brazil Study Trip- The International Capoeira Art Festival
August 17, 2015 @ 8:00 am - August 23, 2015 @ 5:00 pm
August 17th – 23rd, 2015
ABADÁ-Capoeira International Capoeira Art Festival
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Once again, ACSF heads to Brazil for the August Brazil Study Trip. Over 20 students of Mestra Márcia Cigarra will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to participate in trainings, seminars, and the Jogos Mundiais international capoeira competition.
ACSF’s is proud to announce that with funds generated from Sunday’s donation-based Community Capoeira class, three dedicated teen students will travel on scholarships to Brazil for this year’s events.
This year’s Festival is special in that it will commemorate Mestre Camisa’s 60th birthday! The event will begin with four days of workshops with the Mestres and Mestrandos of ABADÁ, held at the CEMB (Centro Educacional Mestre Bimba), located in Sambaetiba, Rio de Janeiro.
Then, from August 20-23, the events will move into the city for the Tenth World Capoeira Games, Mestre Camisa’s 60th birthday celebration, and the Batizado and graduation. This portion of the events will be held in Rio’s Port Zone. This area, known as “Little Africa,” is one of Brazil’s primary port of entry zones, and therefore holds a significant place in the history of slavery in Brazil and capoeira’s history. There couldn’t be a better place to commemorate Mestre Camisa’s 60th birthday.
Each year, Mestre Camisa initiates a social campaign in conjunction with the event in order to bring awareness to a global issue. This year, the campaign is ABADÁFRO, once again in harmony with UNESCO, which just proclaimed the next decade as the International Decade for People of African Descent: recognition, justice, and development.
To close the event on Sunday the 23rd, an estimated 5,000 capoeiristas from around the world will decent on the Port Zone to take part in a giant class led by Mestre Camisa, as well as rodas and an awards ceremony for the competition finalists.
