Learn, Play, Explore, Create, Move, Perform, Sing!
The past three Summer Camp sessions have been full of fun, friends, and tons of learning! During the one-week session, kids spend the day learning capoeira and maculelê, as well as rhythms and songs in Portuguese. They play music-based games of tag, make art projects, try their hand at drumming, and explore capoeira-based games that accentuate team building, leadership and cooperation.
In addition to working with lead instructor Antonio Conteras (Instrutor Corrente) students take classes with guest artists to learn skills like hip hop dance, percussion, and Afro-Brazilian dance including Frevo. Recent guest artists included dancers Tânia Santiago and Mayela Carrasco, Adriana Bessa, Alazon Flores leading a soccer lesson, and a class with youth percussionist Tosh. Youth work with the instructors to create a performance piece, which they present at the final day of camp for friends and family! Through encouragement and guided exercises youth gain confidence while exploring improvisational movement and performance concepts.
