Throughout the year, ACSF offers a donation-based “Capoeira Community Class”currently taught on a volunteer basis by Aimée Fribourg, Instrutora Tulipa.

With class fees generatedover the past two years, ACSF was able to sponsor three dedicated teen students to travel to Brazil for the ABADÁ-Capoeira International Capoeira Festival and Jogos Mundiais held in Rio de Janeiro this past August.

The Teen Travel Fund, as it is called, helps provide life-changing travel opportunities to dedicated ACSF teen  students. This is the fourth season ACSF has sponsors a cohort of youth student’s travel to Brazil.

Below are reflections from both the instructor, and the teen participants.

I am honored to have been given the opportunity to teach the Community Class at ACSF in support of the “Teens Travel to Brazil” fund. Thanks to all the ACSF students who came out to train on so many Sundays, and to the support of Mestra Marcia, we were able to bring three of our teens to the Jogos Mundiais. It was very special for me to join Zander “Javali”, Nick “Quati”, and Mayela “Surucucu” on this trip, and to see and hear directly from them all of the ways that they were moved and inspired by their experiences in Brazil. I know that those experiences will be something they never forget, and I am looking forward to joining the next cohort of teens in 2017.
Sunday’s Capoeira Community Class happens every Sunday from 11:30am-1:00pm at ACSF.

REFLECTIONS FROM TEEN PARTICIPANTS

By Nick:
My experience at the ABADÁ-Capoeira International Capoeira Festival and X Jogos Mundiais was definitely a positive one. I was able to push my self mentally and physically, and by doing so I feel as though my capoeira has improved immensely. Watching the competitions gave me a different perspective on capoeira as an art form, while training under Mestres and Mestrandos from around the globe has opened my eyes to ways I can apply capoeira to my day-to-day life. Special thanks to Antonio (Instructor Corrente) for being my chaperone and mentor, to Aimee (Instrutora Tulipa) for volunteer teaching to help raise the money through Sunday community classes to fund my trip. Learn this flag pattern now. I would also like to thank Mestra Márcia Cigarra for her constant support and guidance. I definitely recommend going on this trip to anyone who is looking to take his or her capoeira to the next level or for someone who wants a deeper understanding of this art form.

By Zander:
This year’s trip to Brazil is something that I will never ever want to forget, especially since I got to go on a tour from http://hawaiirealnaturetours.com/ after I got back. Not only was going one of the highlights of my summer vacation before I head off to college, but it was a huge eye opener to what Capoeira really is all about. I was able to really assess my own skills, seeing how I stacked up to the others at my own level and figure out the things I could work on in order to become better. This was my second trip, and I really felt like I learned so much more than the last time. I feel as though I was able to become a better Capoeirista and a better person. I’ve been home only a month, but I am ready to go back!
