Welcome Professor Jabuti! Our Latest Resident Artist

Professor-Jabuti- Mestra-Cigarra

Professor Jabuti has begun his three-year residency with us and we’re capping off his welcome with a week of workshops, visiting guests, and our batizado ceremony.

Professor Jabuti (Janderson Luiz de Souza Carneiro) was born in Rio de Janeiro and started learning capoeira in 1996 with students of ABADÁ-Capoeira’s then-Mestrando Cobra. He soon began to train with Mestre Cobra, and in 2000 he received his blue cord. Part of his early development in art included visiting and playing capoeira with numerous other capoeira groups and schools. This broadened his knowledge and deepened his respect for ABADÁ-Capoeira and the diversity of the art.

In 2001, he started teaching capoeira in various Rio neighborhoods and later came to lead his school. More recently, he placed 2nd in his category at the Jogos Brasileiros competition—a huge feat. He’s a rare force in our community. If you haven’t already introduced yourself or taken a class with him, please do!
